Visiting the Mariinsky (Hannah Hampton)

One of the most important reasons that I decided to learn Russian was the number of amazing Russian ballet companies and their beautiful technique. After taking classical ballet for many years, I was so excited to see a ballet in the famous Mariinsky Theater for the first time, fulfilling one of my biggest dreams as a dancer. The show was in 3 Acts, each one focusing on a different period of ballet history, which was extremely intriguing. The first act focuses on the beginnings of ballet in the French Court in the last 1600s/early 1700s and is titled Le Divertissement du Roi. The second part of the show was entitled, In the Night, an original piece by Jerome Robbins (famous for his film West Side Story), and consists of 3 couples dancing to pieces by Chopin, representing different types of relationships. The third, and final, act of this ballet was Symphony in C, which consisted of four very traditional pieces created by George Balanchine set to Bizet’s Symphony No.1 in C Major. This ballet experience was something that really added to everyone’s overall understanding and appreciation for Russian culture, and it is not something any of us will forget any time soon!
