The Gilman Scholarship

During my freshman year, I attended an information session about the Gilman Scholarship program, which provides low income students money to study abroad. Here is a link to the website: https://www.iie.org/Programs/Gilman-Scholarship-Program

I knew that in order to get the chance to go to Russia, I needed to get scholarships to help pay for the trip. I applied to the early round of applications, which had a deadline in October. There is also a later application period that is due in March. I figured I had a better chance of getting it if I applied early. The application process required me to write two essays and provide some other information. It was fairly simple. One essay asks you to tell why you need to money/why you are studying abroad, and the other asks you to plan out your post trip project to encourage other students to apply. I was able to meet with Nasha Lewis from the Reeves Center for International Studies at William and Mary to improve my essays. Once I submitted, it was a long time until I heard back, but it was all worth the wait. I received an email telling me I was a recipient, and I knew my dreams of studying abroad would come true. Studying abroad can be affordable! 🙂

For my project to spread the word about the scholarship and share my experience, I have a blog. You can check it out with this link: https://melaniefromrussiawithlove.wordpress.com/
